Joy-Powered Organizations: Because People Are the Point

Updated: 4 hours ago

Nothing can be more fun and rewarding than writing a book with colleagues who challenge and inspire you to be more, do more, and learn more. That is exactly how I felt about embarking on this book journey with Jo Dee and Megan. Having worked with them for several years in driving the human resource profession to be more people-focused, I was thrilled to collaborate with them to co-author Joy-Powered Organizations.

What Is Joy-Powered Organizations About?

It is about people—specifically, the people who make our organizations a success. And that is everyone in our workplace.

In my years of interacting with leaders, I have made a point to say we cannot forget about the people who make the organization work. Without them, we simply cannot exist. So why are we not focused on creating environments that encourage and value them?

Joy-Powered Organizations helps leaders understand why people are so important and how organizations can create strategies to attract, retain, develop, and promote them. Finding strong talent is increasingly more difficult—that is why we have to create workplaces where people do not want to leave, and others want to join.

Why I Wrote This Book

My passion has always been people. That is why I chose to write the chapters on Organizational Strategy, People Strategy, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion—because they illustrate the value and importance of people at work.

Joy-Powered Organizations is a book that speaks directly to leaders about the importance of creating people-focused strategies to bring more joy into the work lives of everyone in the organization. We know this is no easy task—that is why we have broken down each chapter into easy-to-read sections that provide you with just enough information to jumpstart real, lasting change.

You will find each chapter full of ideas, strategies, and actions to get you on the right track in aligning your people with your business.

What’s Inside the Book

Joy-Powered Organizations covers nine critical areas of people strategy, written by three HR practitioners who live and breathe this work every day:

  • Organizational Strategy: Mission, vision, values, culture, and finding your purpose as a leader and an organization.

  • People Strategy: Connecting roles to mission and values, aligning strengths with work, and supporting learning and development.

  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Recognizing the need for DEI, integrating it into culture, and creating real opportunity for everyone.

  • People-Focused Operations: Workforce planning, meaningful work, and the employee experience that keeps people engaged.

  • Teams: Building high-performing, engaged teams aligned to organizational strategy.

  • Recruiting: Attracting the right people through a joy-powered process that reflects your values.

  • Rewards: Compensation, benefits, well-being, flexibility, and community impact—total rewards that truly reward.

  • Performance Management & Talent Development: Feedback, goal setting, personal development plans, and succession planning.

  • Communication: Organizational and individual communication aligned with your values, including the power of storytelling.
