Mental Health Awareness Month 2024

This May, Mental Health Awareness Month shines a timely spotlight on "Where to Start: Mental Health in a Changing World." The truth is, the world is in a constant state of flux - politically, economically, environmentally - and these ever-evolving circumstances can take a profound toll on our collective well-being.

From the pressures of work and relationships to the unsettling realities of global events, it's no wonder so many feel overwhelmed. While society is making progress in normalizing open discussions around mental health, knowing where to begin prioritizing your own emotional needs is often the biggest hurdle.

This Mental Health Month, we encourage you to reflect on the external factors impacting your mindset, and take actionable steps to safeguard your mental well-being. Whether it's setting boundaries, seeking support, or simply carving out time for self-care, there are innumerable pathways to improving your mental health - you just have to take that crucial first step.

Pride Month June 2024

While June is Pride Month, it is important for employers and organizations to be allies year-round.

One of the most impactful ways to

support LGBTQ+ employees is by simply creating a safe space for them to

share their stories - the triumphs and the struggles. Encouraging staff to listen with empathy, striving to understand the unique challenges faced by this marginalized group. These first-hand accounts can cultivate deeper compassion and inspire meaningful allyship.

But the work doesn't stop there. We also recognize the importance of soliciting honest feedback through confidential DEI surveys. By giving all employees a platform to voice their experiences, concerns and ideas, we can identify areas of inequity and take targeted action. Perhaps it's addressing casual comments that make LGBTQ+ individuals feel unseen or unsafe. Or maybe it's enhancing benefits and policies to better support diverse family structures.

This Pride Month, let's come together to amplify LGBTQ+ voices, learn from their truths, and make tangible progress towards a more equitable, affirming workplace. Change happens when we're willing to have uncomfortable conversations and do the hard work. Are you ready to celebrate Pride by becoming a more thoughtful, effective ally?

Juneteenth

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it

officially became a federal holiday.

When celebrating Juneteenth, organizations should approach it as an opportunity to meaningfully advance their DEI initiatives. The first step is to engage in open, honest discussions with employees - particularly those in the Black community - about their personal experiences, perspectives, and the historical significance of the holiday. By creating a safe space for these frank, vulnerable dialogues, leaders can gain invaluable insights to inform their actions.

Next, it's critical to expand the message beyond just commemorating Juneteenth in isolation. Tie these celebrations to the organization's broader DEI goals and commitments. Explain how honoring this historic milestone for the Black community aligns with the company's efforts to foster greater inclusion, equity, and belonging for all. This helps reinforce the holiday's relevance and importance.

Enhancing the meaning of Juneteenth also requires encouraging employees to deepen their understanding of Black history and culture. Provide educational resources, facilitate group learning activities, or invite guest speakers to share their expertise. The more people learn, the more they can appreciate the hard-won freedoms and ongoing struggles of the Black community.

Finally, it's essential to honor the intersectionality of identities when celebrating Juneteenth. Recognize that individuals often encompass multiple, overlapping marginalized identities - such as being Black and LGBTQ+. Extending empathy, awareness and allyship to one underrepresented group inherently benefits others as well, cultivating a more inclusive culture for everyone.

By taking these intentional steps, organizations can transform Juneteenth celebrations into powerful catalysts for driving sustainable DEI progress. It's an opportunity to build understanding, strengthen bonds, and recommit to the vital work of dismantling systemic inequities.

Book Recommendation

"Building on the success of Colonna's book Reboot and the concept of radical self-inquiry, the executive coach encourages leaders to consider the ways they have been complicit in, and benefited from, the conditions in the world that they say they'd like to change, and he shows them the path to creating new systems of inclusion for everyone.

We all want to belong. For executives and managers, to be better leaders—and people— we must create welcoming environments in which ourselves and others feel recognized and have a place. But to do so, we must first face our own need for belonging and how that need is often thwarted. Colonna argues that only through radical self-inquiry can we come home to ourselves and others and, in doing so, create systemic belonging—homes —for everyone.

With its unusual blend of poetry, quotes, and examples from Colonna’s own life as well as the lives of his clients— Reunion is a life-altering guide for today’s complex and divisive world. Its wise insights and practical advice will help create an inclusive and welcoming workspace, discover the best of who we are, and nurture and support those whom we are privileged to lead."-- Amazon
